Civil society organizations (CSOs) have a particularly important role to play in the fight against child pornography, organ trafficking, victim assistance and survivors of human trafficking. They engage in a broad variety of activities from lobbying and advocating for the issue to providing direct support to the victims. UN.GIFT continues to draw on CSOs` expertise and experience to advise other stakeholders on promising practices and connects organizations across continents.

UNODC recognises that global problems require not only global, but also regional responses. That's why studies like the one presented here are so crucial to understanding how best to combat this modern form of slavery.

The aim of the research presented in this study is to help lay the foundation for targeted and consistent approaches in the provision of assistance and protection to victims of human trafficking through improved cooperation among State actors and civil society organizations. The research aims in particular to establish a knowledge-base on existing cooperation mechanisms, identify shortcomings and obstacles and formulate recommendations for improved cooperation.

This study was conducted within the Preparatory Regional Project on Fostering NGO - Law Enforcement Cooperation in Preventing and Combating Human Trafficking in, from and to the Baltic Sea Region - Jointly implemented by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Council of the Baltic Sea States Task Force against Trafficking in Human Beings (CBSS TF-THB).

Developed following a survey among users of the first edition of the
Handbook-
Working with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights: A Handbook for NGOs (2006)-this comprehensively updated and revised second edition puts United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms at its centre. Speaking to all civil society actors, including but not only non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the
Handbook explains how civil society can engage with various United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms. It is the hope of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) that this
Handbook will enable more people to enjoy and make claim to their human rights through these bodies and mechanisms.

More information about human trafficking on the website of
