NGO ASTRA trains Serbian police on communicating with victims of human trafficking
( ASTRA) - The Serbian NGO ASTRA - Anti Trafficking Action, in cooperation with the Dutch Criminal Police and with support of the Royal Netherlands Embassy to Serbia, held a training this month to improve law enforcement officials' communication with trafficking victims. The training sought to improve officers' ability to identify potential victims and obtain an accurate statement while avoiding secondary victimization.
The Ministry of the Interior of Serbia gave significant support to the implementation of this training.
Henk Werson, chief police inspector of the Dutch national police for combating human trafficking, led the training. Werson and his team emphasized practical techniques for interviewing and collecting essential information in spite of language barriers. The training was held on October 15-18, 2012 in Belgrade, bringing together 22 border police officers from check points in all seven Border Police Regional Centers.
This training was implemented as part of ASTRA's effort to enhance the capacities of local anti-trafficking actors of various profiles though peer learning and exchange of experiences with their peers from foreign countries.
