Free the Slaves 2011 Freedom Awards: Call for nominations
10 May 2010.- The Freedom Awards celebrate and honour those organizations and individuals working to end human trafficking. This year, the organization Free the Slaves is again accepting nominations for the 2011 Freedom Awards.
The Awards acknowledge the determination and perseverance of community-based organizations, survivors of slavery, anti-slavery leaders and activist. Awards are given to different categories. The Harriet Tubman Award goes to a community-based organization in any part of the world, making significant contributions to end slavery. The Harriet Tubman Award offers a grant of $25 000 US every two years and a technical assistance package worth $15 000 US each year for two years. The Award also includes the production of a short documentary by Free the Slaves about the activities of the winning organization and a tour around the United States to share experiences with other organizations.
In 2009 the Harriet Tubman Award went to The Working Women's Association, Shramajivee Mahila Samity (SMS), an organization in India working to end human trafficking. SMS goes undercover to expose traffickers and trace missing people, they help rescue slaves and reunite families, as well educate people in villages about the dangers of human trafficking. The winners of the 2010 Freedom Awards will be announced mid-2010.
The deadline for nominations for the 2011 Freedom Awards is Sunday 1 August 2010. The Freedom Awards are also welcoming self-nominations. Each Award has its own eligibility requirements.
