Clinton Global Initiative host new session on human trafficking
25 September 2009 - Yesterday a cohort of key players in the fight against human trafficking met during a working session in New York on the occasion of the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. Julia Ormond, UNODC Goodwill Ambassador and Luis CdeBaca, US Ambassador-at-large nominated by President Obama, were also on the panel.
The panel aims at educating participants on the key issues, with a focus on practical and constructive solutions. Around the world, there are inspiring examples of major corporations that are raising awareness and mobilizing actions aimed at ensuring that no person is trafficked or enslaved. It is a clear collaborative effort, as leading government officials are working with each other and with celebrities, non-governmental organizations and the media to not only raise awareness of the challenges, but also encourage enforcement of policies that protect individuals from being trafficked or enslaved. New Partnerships are developing to tackle child labor, which keeps an estimated 180 million children out of school and undermines their long-term prosperity and health.

Recognizing an unprecedented opportunity to build on this momentum and mobilize awareness and action among all sectors on this important issue, this session sought to equip audience members with practical ideas and constructive next steps to help improve the lives of millions of vulnerable men, women, and children.
Several commitments were announced yesterday during the session that aim to end human trafficking. The day culminated with a special session highlighting the progress of Brad Pitt's 2007 CGI Commitment to build sustainable housing in New Orleans. The Fifth Annual Meeting of CGI will continue until Friday.
