UN.GIFT in the World Cup

12 April 2010.- As football fans around the globe are gearing up for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, UN.GIFT is paving the way for an anti-human trafficking awareness campaign.

Between 11 June and 11 July 2010 South Africa will be hosting one of the major sporting events, attracting visitors from all over the world. And while the mood in South Africa is festive, concerns have been raised regarding the potential of increased human trafficking.

To defeat risks and champion anti-human trafficking awareness, several international organizations are coming together for an awareness raising campaign that will take place around the World Cup. The International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will be taking part in these efforts.

The campaign will include a week of activities planned before the beginning of the World Cup to increase awareness about human trafficking amongst vulnerable groups. This initiative aims to bring attention to the problem of human trafficking on a world stage and also to prevent incidents of human trafficking by increasing knowledge amongst South Africans and visitors to the country.

Similar efforts are being carried out by non-governmental organizations around the world, such as the Red Card Campaign by Free Generation International. UN.GIFT would like to know if your organization is also working on an anti-human trafficking campaign around the World Cup. Please let us know.
