UN.GIFT and the 2010 FIFA World Cup ™
14 June 2010.- The wait is over. The 2010 FIFA World Cup ™ being held in South Africa has started and as football fans across the globe follow the teams taking part in the tournament, UN.GIFT and its partners in South Africa are rallying against human trafficking.
The United Nations in South Africa and UN.GIFT have developed an awareness raising campaign to sensitize the population to human trafficking, while one of the biggest sports tournaments takes place in the country. The International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), teamed up to create the material for the campaign.
During the World Cup these organizations will carry out different activities where the information material will be distributed. UNODC for instance is working on victim empowerment in different provinces of South Africa, UNICEF has established child-friendly spaces inside four of the FIFA Fan Fests, and IOM will ensure that victim assistance is readily available through its comprehensive victim assistance programme.
As the world celebrates the games, UN.GIFT and its partners will take the field to bring attention to the crime of human trafficking and help to prevent incidents by increasing knowledge amongst South Africans and visitors to the country during the tournament and beyond.
