The Polish Council to Fight Human Trafficking
In March 2008, Mrs. Jolanta Kwasniewska, former first Lady of Poland and member of the Women Leaders' Council, launched the Polish Council to Fight Human Trafficking which unites representatives from academia, the private sector, civil society, and law enforcement in the fight against human trafficking.
The Polish Council was presented to the public at a press conference in Warsaw, Poland. Tadeusz Mazowiecki, a former leader of the Solidarity movement and prime minister, Barbara Skarga, professor of philosophy at the Polish Academy of Science and Henryka Bochniarz, professor of economy and Vice-President of Boeing International are among the Council's members. It's mission is to raise awareness about human trafficking as well as co-ordinate action, forge new partnerships and work to reduce the stigma of victims.
The Council's first action was to voice an appeal through the media to the Polish authorities, and send individualized letters to the Prime Minister - Mr. Donald Tusk, the Marshal of the Sejm - Mr. Bronisław Komorowski and the Minister of Foreign Affaires - Mr. Radosław Sikorski for ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. The Convention was signed by Poland on May 16th, 2005 and is still waiting for ratification.
Mrs. Kwasniewska also presented "a decalogue" - 10 basic points to remember before going abroad. Jolanta Kwasniewska's Foundation "Communication without barriers" will disseminate it especially in remote areas of Poland and trough very basic media before and during holidays time.
