Private sector initiatives
UN.GIFT aims to work with the private sector to identify policy measures and corporate strategies to prevent and combat human trafficking. UN.GIFT also promotes good Corporate Responsibility (CSR) measures, supports knowledge networks and offers a database of good practices.
Companies - in particular those with operations in "at-risk" sectors such as those mentioned above - may wish to start with a risk assessment to determine their level of exposure to human trafficking. A high incidence of abuse reported in a particular country or region may give companies cause to consider assessing their risk of negatively impacting human rights. Companies may also wish to:
UN.GIFT is working with companies worldwide from the travel and tourism sectors, in particular airlines, hotels, and bus and rail lines. Currently, UN.GIFT is implementing awareness raising campaigns with Qatar Airways, South African Airways, Hilton Hotel Vienna, Eurolines and OEBB.
The companies chose activities according to their corporate policies:
- Provision of employment to former victim(s) of human trafficking
- Dissemination of educational leaflets on human trafficking to their clients and/or staff
- Training company staff on human trafficking (through UN.GIFT's e-learning tool).
- Dissemination of the anti-human trafficking engagement and cooperation with UN.GIFT to a larger business community as a good practice model
- Featuring UN.GIFT's Public Service Announcements and other UN.GIFT awareness raising products on their websites or other media.
- Internal and external communication: publishing articles on human trafficking and/or UN.GIFT in internal newsletters and on the website.
Publication on human trafficking for business
UN.GIFT, UN Global Compact (UNGC), ILO and IOM are developing a publication targeting the private sector to increase awareness on human trafficking and assist companies in addressing the problem of trafficking in human beings. This publication will show how human trafficking relates to companies and presents "business cases" for taking steps to prevent and combat human trafficking.
Promoting private sector engagement and CSR through Business Leader's Award
The Business Leader's Award process was launched in 2008, by UNGIFT, UN Global Compact and End Human Trafficking Now. This inaugural prize, the first of its kind, was designed to recognise the commitment, creativity and leadership of business leaders in fighting modern slavery. During the closing ceremony of the Luxor International Forum, the Jury announced the three winners, chosen from a pool of almost 20 nominations submitted from all over the world.

eLearning Tool for Business
UN.GIFT and the End Human Trafficking Now! Campaign (EHTN!) have developed an eLearning course which is a modular training programme for business leaders, managers and employees of business companies.
